One of the successful Chinese players of the 1990s, Liu Guoliang has won all of the major titles. He has won world titles in singles (1999), doubles (1997, 1999), mixed doubles (1997) and team (1995, 1997, 2001). In 1996, he won both the singles and the doubles (with Kong Linghui at the Atlanta Olympics, winning a bronze (singles) and a silver (doubles) four years later. In 1996, he also became winner of the ITTF Table Tennis World Cup. Retiring after the 2001 World Championships, he was named head coach of the Chinese men's national team.
