Pau Gasol has twice come within touching distance of winning Olympic gold only to be denied basketball's ultimate international prize by the all-conquering Americans.
A four-time Olympian and three-time Games medallist, Gasol helped Spain win silver medals at Beijing 2008 and London 2012, as well as bronze at Rio 2016.
Gasol, who made his Olympic debut at the Athens 2004 Games, has plenty of other medals and honours to show for a glittering career. He has won a FIBA World Cup, three EuroBasket titles with the Spanish national team and two NBA titles with the Los Angeles Lakers.
His career began with his hometown club FC Barcelona but he was soon plying his trade in the star-studded NBA, during a seven-season stay with the Memphis Grizzlies after moving to join the sport's elite in 2001.
Gasol was the NBA Rookie of the Year in 2002 in Memphis, one of only two non-American NBA players to win that award and also earned the first of six NBA All-Star selections.
But his talents were much sought after and he joined the Lakers in 2008, where he won two NBA Championships and earned three further All-Star selections from 2009-2011. Gasol signed for the Chicago Bulls in 2014 where his talent has shown no sign of diminishing, with further All-Star honours in 2015 and 2016,.
Gasol was born at the hospital where both his mother worked as a doctor and father was a nurse administrator and he followed them into the profession, enrolling at medical school before his basketball career took off.
Gasol is the older brother of fellow NBA player Marc Gasol, who is also a two-time Olympic silver medallist.
