It's a fun new discipline for Buenos Aires 2018 and here's where you can watch it.

Beach handball will make a big statement at YOG in more ways than one.

With 216 athletes competing, it will easily be the biggest debutante discipline in Buenos Aires.

But it isn’t a totally unknown sport to the Youth Olympics.

Beach handball replaces the indoor version of the sport, which was included at Singapore 2010 and Nanjing 2014.

Beach handball basics

In South America there will be 12 male and 12 female squads of nine players, with four players (three court players and one goalkeeper) playing at any time.

Goals are still scored when the ball is thrown into the opponent’s goal. Those scored by a goalkeeper or from a penalty throw are worth an extra point.

Matches are played over two periods of ten minutes.

Unlike indoor handball, each period is scored separately and the winner of a period is awarded one point. If the scores are tied then they play 'golden goal', with the first team to score winning.

If both teams win a period, a 5-shot ‘shoot-out’ ensues, where a player will try to beat the opposing goalkeeper one-on-one.

Spectacular goals

The sand underfoot plays a significant role on how the game is played.

The softer landing means that players are likely to try spectacular, twisting mid-air shots in order to outfox the goalie.

Subsequently fans can expect to see some truly Instagram-worthy moments!

The first IHF Under-17 World Championships were held in Mauritius in July this year, with Spain winning the men’s event and Hungary claiming the women’s crown.
