Record 10th world champs crown for bobsleigh G.O.A.T. Francesco Friedrich

Mr. bobsleigh Francesco Friedrich is unstoppable once more as Germany sweep the podium at Altenberg worlds

Francesco Friedrich has won a record 10th gold medal at the IBSF bobsleigh World Championships 2021 in Altenberg, Germany on Sunday (7 February).

The German pilot won by over two seconds to secure his seventh 2-man bobsleigh world title in-a-row.

The win means that Friedrich overtakes Italy's Eugenio Monti as the most successful slider in world champ history. .

The double Olympic champion came into these worlds having won 11 of 12 World Cup races to claim the overall title and proved here that he dominates like few others in world sport a year out from the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.

Friedrich and push athlete Alexander Schueller clocked 54.83, 55.41, 54.64, and 54.90 for a total of 3:39.78 after four runs - fastest on every single one - and winning by an astonishing margin of over two seconds.

Friedrich's closest rival was fellow German Johannes Lochner with Eric Franke, the overall World Cup runner-up was +2.05 from Friedrich.

"Lochner is the best on this planet," said the IBSF commentary team, "but Friedrich is sliding on another planet."

Lochner is a 2019 mixed team world champion and double world silver medallist and the only man to beat Friedrich this season at the Innsbruck World Cup two-man event in 2020-21.

Junior World Champions Hans-Peter Hannighofer/Christian Roeder completed the German sweep in third place (+ 2.23 seconds).

Netherlands sled crashes out

Switzerland's Simon Friedli/Andreas Haas were fourth (+2.59) and Switzerland's Michael Vogt/Sandro Michel were devastated after slipping from third overnight to fifth on Saturday +2.63 off the pace.

The Altenberg track is notoriously challenging and on Run 3 Netherlands duo Ivo de Bruin and Franjic Janko had a scare as their bobsleigh flipped and slid all the way through the final quarter of the track to the finish line.

Luckily both got out of the bob unaided and hugged it out.
