Abhinav Bindra is hopeful of getting more gold medallists from India at Tokyo 2020
On the 11th anniversary of his Olympic gold medal triumph in the 10m air rifle event, Indian shooting legend Abhinav Bindra made a heartfelt wish to the Indian contingent that will participate at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.
Bindra took to Twitter and tweeted: “A year away from now I do wish that we would be busy celebrating several gold medals by our athletes. I wish them the best as they go and fight for gold medals but most importantly for their pride and self-respect!"
The 36-year-old remains India’s lone gold medallist for an individual event, winning his acclaim at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Bindra was very close to winning a second Olympic medal at Rio 2016, where he was beaten to bronze by Ukranian Serhiy Kulish.
India’s contingent for Tokyo 2020 so far has 11 names, which includes the likes of Manu Bhaker and Saurabh Chaudhary — both medal prospects going into the Games.
Apart from the shooters, the Indian wrestling team also looks strong with top-ranked grapplers like Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat leading the line.
