Ankita Raina, who came from a set down to win the opening round, was knocked out in the Round of 32 at the Phillip Island Trophy WTA event on Monday.

Raina lost 3-6, 6-3, 4-6 to Australian Kimberly Birrell in the contest held at the 1573 Arena.

The Indian began the match on the back foot as she went down in the first set but came back strongly to level in the second. She, however, could not continue in the momentum to win the third set and went down in a closely-fought contest that lasted two hours and 25 minutes.

The Indian struggled on her second serve, winning only 41 per cent of the points compared to 60 per cent for Birrell. While Raina converted six of the second break points she earned to stay in the fight, she couldn't do much on her serve. Through the match, Birrell created 26 break point opportunities and won seven of them to nose ahead.

The 28-year-old though had a better outing in the doubles saw, as she paired up with Russia's Kamilla Rahimova to beat the Romanian pair of Patricia Maria Țig and Mihaela Buzarnescu 6-1, 7-6 in straight games.

The Indo-Russian duo coasted through the first set but were given a tough fight in the second. Raina and Rahimova, however, broke away in the tie-breaker, winning it 7-3 to clinch victory in an hour and 22 minutes.

The pair will have a tough challenge at their hands in the next round as they will take on fifth seeds Oksana Kalashnikova of Georgia and Sweden's Cornelia Lister.
