India’s biggest boxing stars MC Mary Kom and Amit Panghal both in action for the first time at the Asia/Oceania Olympic qualifiers on day five of the event in Amman.

Six-time world champion Mary Kom has been seeded second in her category and will face New Zealand’s Benny Tasmyn in the first round on Saturday. Two wins are good enough to take her to Tokyo in what will be her last shot at Olympic glory.

Amit Panghal, silver medallist at the World Championships, is seeded one in his division and will be up against Mongolia’s Enkhmanadakh Kharkhuu, who he has a 1-1 record against. Having lost his last bout against the Mongolian, Amit Panghal will be keen to avenge that in Amman, Jordan.

Gaurav Solanki, who beat Akylbek Esenbek Uulu in the first round, will also be in action. He will face top-seeded Mirazizbek Mirzakhalilov of Uzbekistan.

Women’s squad: Mary Kom (51kg), Sakshi Chaudhary (57kg), Simranjit Kaur (60kg), Lovlina Borgohain (69kg) and Pooja Rani (75kg).

Mary Kom’s biopic had a little too much ‘masala’ for the veteran Indian boxer’s liking.
