Beauty Dungdung scored a sublime hat-trick (29', 38, 52') to guide India junior women's hockey team to a 5-3 win over Chile’s junior side in the first match of their tour at the Prince of Wales Country Club in Santiago on Sunday.
Lalrindiki (14') and Sangita Kumari (30') also scored while Simone Avelli (10'), Paula Sanz (25') and Ferranda Arrireta (49') found the backboard for the hosts.
The Indian team started the match on the backfoot as Chile retained most of the possession and opened the scoring through Avelli, who positioned herself on the end of a perfect pass, to draw first blood. It, however, took the visitors only four minutes as they equalized through forward Lalrindiki.
But Chile continued to dominate possession and heaped pressure on the Indian eves as they were awarded a penalty corner in the 25th minute. Sanz made no mistake from the spot as she converted with ease.
India, however, continued to show resilience in the latter stage of the tournament and scored twice in two minutes to change the momentum of the game. Dungdung was on target for the first time in 29th minute before Sangita hit home to allow the visitors to take a 3-2 lead.
From there on India attacked continuously as Dungdung netted her second goal in the 38th minute to open up a two-goal cushion.
Chile stayed alive in the competition after converting a penalty corner in the 49th minute through Arrieta to reduce the deficit. A spirited Indian side, however, looked unfazed by the goal as Dungdung completed her hat-trick in the 52nd minute to mark the fifth goal for the visitors.
India junior women's team are next slated to take on their Chilean counterparts on Monday.
