Bundesliga: Wolfsburg climb to sixth after Werder Bremen victory
Wolfsburg had the upper hand over Hoffenheim in their battle for a place in Europe on matchday 30 of the Bundesliga.
The 2009 Bundesliga champions leapfrogged Hoffenheim into sixth place, which makes them eligible to play the Europa League qualifiers, with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Werder Bremen on Sunday.
The only goal of the game was in the 82nd minute of the match when Wout Weghorst.met a cross from Felix Klaus and glanced his header into the far corner of the net.
The Wolves held onto the slender lead for the remaining eight minutes and jumped to sixth ahead of Hoffenheim, who drew with Dusseldorf on Saturday.
Union Berlin vs Schalke
Schalke conceded some ground in the race for a European qualifying berth in the Bundesliga after their 1-1 draw with Union Berlin.
In their first top-flight visit to the German capital to play Union, Schalke found themselves behind in just the 11th minute.
Anthony Ujah found fellow midfielder Robert Andrich making a run down the middle and the latter smartly finished past the Bayern-bound Alexander Nubel to give Union Berlin the lead.
Schalke forced an equaliser soon after when full-back Jonjoe Kenny, on loan from Everton, was found in space by Daniel Caligiuri and the youngster unleashed a swerving shot that left Union Berlin keeper Rafal Gikiewicz no chance.
Augsburg vs Koln
The final game of the day in the Bundesliga saw Augsburg play out a similar 1-1 draw with Koln, a result that helped the latter in their battle to reach the top half of the Bundesliga table.
Koln keeper Timo Horn saved a penalty from Florian Niederlechner before Koln striker Anthony Modeste, pounced to give the visitors the lead in the 85th minute.
But Augsburg found a late leveller as full back Phillip Max slottted home.
