The 2020 BWF World Tour will resume with two tournaments in Denmark in October, the Badminton World Federation (BWF) announced on Thursday.

The Super 750 Denmark Open, to be played between October 13-18, 2020, in the city of Odense will mark the return of the BWF World Tour.

With the COVID-19 pandemic necessitating the creation of bio-secure bubbles, where the participants and support staff stay in the designated spaces till the duration of the events, the BWF has decided to restrict the number of locations.

As a result, a second Denmark Open at the same venue a week later, between October 20-25, 2020 has been made a part of the 2020 edition of the Tour.

The season will then be moved to Asia for two Super 1000 tournaments starting November 10, the locations of which are yet to be decided.

The BWF World Tour Finals will also be held at an Asian location between November 25-29, 2020.

Rio 2016 silver-medallist PV Sindhu is the only Indian badminton player to win the BWF World Tour Finals, having won the inaugural edition in 2018.

“Managing travel logistics between different territories where different entry and safety restrictions apply has been the biggest challenge. Therefore, an adjusted tournament calendar was developed,” BWF Secretary General Thomas Lund said in a statement.

“Our main concern has always been the health and safety of all participants and we have created a (soon to be released) BWF Safety Protocols and Operating Procedures document to guide us in this process.”

Thomas, Uber Cup to go ahead as planned

Denmark will not have to wait till mid-October for badminton to return as the BWF has decided to go ahead with the Thomas Cup and Uber Cup Finals between October 3-11, 2020 in the city of Aarhus.

The Indian badminton team will be seen in action in both tournaments.

The Indian badminton men’s team has been drawn in Group C alongside Germany, Algeria and hosts Denmark in the Thomas Cup.

Meanwhile, the Indian badminton women’s team will play in Group D against Germany, France and heavyweights China in the Uber Cup.

The tournament will likely be the first time that PV Sindhu will be seen in action since March.

The top two teams from each group will qualify for the quarter-finals.
