Divij Sharan-Igor Zelenay knocked out of Australian Open warm-up event

The Indo-Slovak duo lost to fifth seeds Fabrice Martin-Jeremy Chardy in the men's doubles Round of 16 at the Murray River Open

India's campaign at the Murray River Open came to an end as Divij Sharan and his Slovak partner Igor Zelenay lost 6-7 (5), 4-6 to fifth-seeded French pair of Fabrice Martin-Jeremy Chardy in the Round of 16.

Sharan was the last Indian standing at the Australian Open warm-up tournaments after Rohan Bopanna, Sumit Nagal and Ankita Raina were knocked out earlier in the week.

The Indo-Slovak pair earned 61 per cent points through their first serve in comparison to the 70% of their opponents. Sharan-Zelenay also registered two aces in the match compared to four by their counterparts.

Earlier, in the previous round, Sharan and his partner came from behind to defeat the Argentine-Spanish pair of Guillermo Duran and Albert Ramos-Vinola 4-6, 6-3, 10-8 in a nail-biting men's doubles encounter at the hard court event.

It was the first tournament the Indian doubles specialist was competing at since the Sofia Open in November 2020.

Sharan will be competing in the Australian Open and will be awaiting the doubles draw for the same which will be revealed later.

The Australia Open will get underway from Monday, February 8.
