The highly anticipated Manchester derby as part of the EFL Cup semi-finals is expected to go ahead despite eight of Manchester City’s first-team members testing positive for COVID-19.
The Pep Guardiola-coached side is scheduled to take on local rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford on Wednesday (Thursday in India) with a place in this season’s Carabao Cup final up for grabs.
City’s Premier League fixture against Everton on Boxing Day was postponed after they reported positive COVID-19 cases following Christmas day celebrations. However, the former Premier League champions are expected to face Chelsea in their EPL tie on Sunday.
Manchester City’s form this season has been tepid. They are placed a lowly eighth after 14 matches in the Premier League.
Manchester United, meanwhile, are second in the Premier League. They will hope to build on this run when they welcome City in the EFL Cup semi-finals.
In the other EFL Cup semi-final, Tottenham Hotspurs will host Championship side Brentford FC.
After a flying start to their season, Spurs looked to have hit a roadblock with back-to-back losses against Liverpool and Leicester City in the Premier League. But Tottenham did well to bounce back with a commanding win over Leeds United.
The EFL Cup semi-final should be a formality for a Tottenham Hotspurs side that’s firing on all cylinders this season.
