Hyderabad FC (HFC) kick off their Indian Super League (ISL) 2020-21 campaign with a fixture against Odisha FC at the GMC Stadium in Bambolim, Goa, on November 23.
HFC made their ISL debut last season, coming in the place of the now-defunct club FC Pune City. Their maiden campaign, however, didn't go according to plan as they finished at the bottom with just 10 points from 18 matches.
The team management started preparing for ISL 2020-21 during the last campaign itself, appointing former Bengaluru FC gaffer Albert Roca as the head coach for ISL season 7. The Spaniard had already started building a team but departed during the pre-season to link up with Ronald Koeman at Spanish giants FC Barcelona.
He was replaced by another Spaniard - Manuel Marquez Roca - a former Espanyol and Las Palmas reserve team manager.
With Marko Stankovic hanging up his boots to turn reporter for Sky Austria and other foreign players like Marcelinho, Bobo, Giles Barnes and others leaving, Hyderabad FC have drafted in defender Odei Onaindia, midfielder Lluis Sastre, forwards Aridane Santana and Francisco Sandaza to form a Spanish core.
Spanish winger Nestor Gordillo is still in Hyderabad’s books but is yet to be registered for ISL 2020-21. Australian striker Joel Chianse and Brazilian defensive midfielder Joao Victor complete HFC's foreign player quota.
Among the six new foreign recruits, Indian fans will be familiar with Aridane Santana, who impressed as Odisha FC's No. 9 last campaign before an unfortunate injury cut his season short.
From the Indian contingent, Adil Khan, Nikhil Poojari, Hitesh Sharma will return. The roster has also been bolstered by the addition of veteran goalkeeper Subrata Paul, former Kerala Blasters winger Halicharan Narzary and former FC Goa defender Chinglensana Singh.
Highly-rated 17-year-old forward Rohit Danu is also a part of the Hyderabad FC squad for ISL 2020-21.
