Arjun Atwal soars to tied 19th at Rocket Mortgage Classic golf
Indian golfer Arjun Atwal enjoyed a productive third round to continue his ascent at the Rocket Mortgage Classic at the Detroit Golf Club on Saturday.
Having shown steady progress, Arjun Atwal rode his momentum as he worked his way through a cluttered leaderboard to finish the penultimate round with an aggregate of 11-under (70-69-66) to end the day in a tie for 19th. He was tied 55th when the cut was made on Friday.
American Matthew Wolff carded a second straight 64 to jump to a sole lead at the Rocket Mortgage Classic as the nation celebrated Independence Day.
The 21-year-old leads the competition at 19-under by three shots over compatriots Ryan Armour (67) and Bryson DeChambeau (67).
The weekend couldn’t have started on a better note for Arjun Atwal as an eagle on a par-five seventh, squeezed between two bridies also saw him climb up to the lead for a brief period.
But with the heavyweights teeing off later in the day, the Indian veteran would soon drop down the order as they made the most of a low-scoring day to stake their claim for the title.
On what was a rather comfortable outing, the only downside in the Arjun Atwal’s game came in the opening and the closing holes as the 47-year-old left it too long on the greens earning him bogeys.
“A pity it had to finish like that with a three-putt, just like the start. That's three, three-putts this week and two in a single day,” he would tell the Press Trust of India on Saturday.
The Indian seemed content with his performance so far, however, admitted that he could have done better on the greens.
“I hit well but didn't putt too well, though I holed some big ones. That putt on 18 from 60 feet had so many ups and downs and twists and the speed was 14. I hit it well but was 10-12 feet short. The second putt stopped at the top of the lip. That hurt,” he said.
