The Indian women’s hockey team fell 2-0 to Argentina seniors in Buenos Aires on Thursday. This was India’s second match on their practice tour to South America.
This was the Indian team’s second-consecutive defeat against the senior Argentina hockey women’s team after a 3-2 loss earlier in the week.
India are yet to win on this tour so far. The tourists drew the first two matches against the junior team and then lost the next two against Argentina B.
On Thursday, Argentina were on the attack from the whistle and took the lead as early as the second minute.
They earned a penalty corner from a foot foul after penetrating the circle and Silvina D’Elia was clinical with her shot to put Argentina ahead 1-0.
The Indian women’s hockey team were jolted by the early goal but gradually the defence settled down. Neither team managed to create many opportunities as the second and third quarters went goalless.
Argentina probed the Indian defence relentlessly in the final quarter it paid off with six minutes left on the clock
An error from the Indian defenders gave Argentina another penalty corner and the world’s No. 2 converted that chance through Agustina Albertarrio to seal the match without much fuss.
“Argentina was very effective in their PCs (penalty corners) and that was, for me, the deciding factor today. We feel we are getting closer to win, but small mistakes can make a huge difference in the match especially against a top-class team like Argentina," chief coach Sjoerd Marijne said after the match.
“If you don't convert your opportunities, you know the other team will and that's what happened today,” Marijne pointed out. “Our structure was much better in this match and that's why in the first two quarters we created good opportunities in the circle.”
The Indian hockey women’s team will play its third match against the senior Argentine girls on Saturday.
