Unbeaten in their last five Indian Super League (ISL) 2020-21 matches, East Bengal will look to keep the run going when they face Kerala Blasters FC at the Tilak Maidan in round 12 of the league phase on Friday (Jan. 15).
Currently eighth on the ISL points table with 10 points from as many games, the Red and Golds are looking to challenge for a playoff spot and a win against Kerala Blasters will certainly help their cause. Having ended 2020 at the bottom of the table, Robbie Fowler’s East Bengal are on the rise in the new year and find themselves just five points off the top four. They won two of their three matches in 2021.
Key to their surge in form has been the arrival of 22-year-old Nigerian striker Bright Enobakhare, who has already scored two goals in three matches. Veteran Indian defender Raju Gaikwad’s arrival has also strengthened East Bengal’s dodgy defence.
The likes of Matti Steinmann, Jacques Maghoma, Dani Fox and Scott Neville also seem to have adapted to Indian conditions, making the once struggling East Bengal side look like a revived unit.
Kerala Blasters are just one point behind East Bengal and having beaten Jamshedpur FC in their last match, Kibu Vicuna’s men will be full of confidence.
With five goals already this season, Australian forward Jordan Murray has been the man in form for the yellow Brigade this season.
The last time the two teams met in December 2020, the match ended in a 1-1 draw. A late goal from Kerala Blasters youngster Jeakson Singh denied East Bengal all three points.
