La Liga preview: Real Sociedad vs Real Madrid likely starting line-ups, live streaming times and more
Real Madrid will be hoping to extend their winning streak when they face Real Sociedad on Monday. After Barcelona dropped points against Sevilla on Saturday, the La Liga title race is now even closer than before.
Facing Real Sociedad, who are competing for a top-four spot this season, will be a tricky task. While Real Madrid won their previous fixture against Real Sociedad 3-1 this season, the Royal had completed the double over Los Blancos last season.
Where they stand in La Liga table
Real Madrid sit second on La Liga table with 62 points from 29 matches. They are three points adrift of Barcelona but have a game in hand.
With a goal difference of three, a comprehensive victory for Real Madrid against Real Sociedad could see Zinedine Zidane’s men reach the top of the table this matchweek.
Real Sociedad have not been able to get a victory since returning to La Liga following the three-month COVID-19 break.
Likely starting line-ups
Real Sociedad predicted starting XI: Alex Remiro, Aritz Elustondo, Diego Llorente, Robin Le Normand, Nacho Monreal, Mikel Merino, Igor Zubeldia, Martin Odegaard, Adnan Januzaj, Mikel Oyarzabal, Willian Jose
Real Madrid predicted starting XI: Thibaut Courtois, Dani Carvajal, Raphael Varane, Sergio Ramos, Marcelo, Carlos Casemiro, Toni Kroos, Luka Modric, Eden Hazard, Vinícius Junior, Karim Benzema
Injuries and team news
Real Sociedad are racing against time to get their star player and Real Madrid loanee Martin Odegaard fit for the big fixture. Martin Odegaard had sustained a muscular injury during Real Sociedad’s loss to Alaves.
With club captain Asier Illarramendi already out for the season, the Basque club could also be without Ander Guevara, Ander Barrenetxea and Luca Sangalli for the match.
Apart from injuries, Imanol Alguacil will be without Joseba Zaldua, who saw a red card on Thursday. The good news is Mikel Merino’s return into the midfield, while Nacho Monreal and Robin Le Normand come back to the defence.
Real Madrid have had their own niggles with defender Nacho, midfielder Isco and strikers Luka Jovic and Lucas Vazquez all sidelined with injuries. A persistent toe injury has also kept Mariano Diaz doubtful for the game.
Real Sociedad vs Real Madrid head-to-head
Real Sociedad have faced Real Madrid on 145 occasions in La Liga with the league giants winning in 82 occasions. Real Sociedad have won 26 matches with the remaining 37 drawn.
The last time they faced this season was in November last year, when goals from Karim Benzema, Federico Valverde and Luka Modric saw Real Madrid win their home match 3-1.
Players to watch out for
For Real Sociedad, the key to success this season has pretty much depended on 21-year-old Martin Odegaard, who has combined brilliantly with Mikel Oyarzabal upfront.
Apart from the duo, the club has also seen striker William Jose and winger Portu netting 16 goals between them.
Real Madrid have scored six times in two matches since returning to action last week and forward Karim Benzema has been the forefront of it. The French striker has 16 goals and six assists to his name this season, so far.
The emergence of Eden Hazard, since joining from Chelsea last summer, has also been notable in recent matches.
What they said
Zinedine Zidane: “We are where we want to be but now we have to keep going because this is the second game, we've got nine finals to come. We have to rest up now because we don't have much time, and we then have to prepare."
Imanol Alguacil: “Real Madrid has returned very strong. It will always be difficult, but we are looking forward to taking the game forward. We just have to recover our best version and dare.”
