Reigning La Liga champions Real Madrid kick start their title defence with a trip to the Anoeta Stadium to face Real Sociedad in matchweek 2. Fans in India can catch live streaming of the La Liga match on Monday.
Zinedine Zidane’s side will be itching to start their campaign on a positive note and get a headstart on arch-rivals Barcelona, whose first match will be in matchweek 3.
Real Madrid will be full of confidence heading into the match, having thrashed Getafe 6-0 in their only pre-season friendly on Tuesday. Karim Benzema was the star of the game with four goals.
No Odegaard return
Zidane, however, will be without Eden Hazard, who is nursing an ankle injury. Another player who is likely to miss the match from the Los Blancos is Martin Odegaard.
The Norwegian youngster had a breakthrough season last year while on loan to Sociedad, helping the team finish sixth and reach the Copa del Rey final, which has been deferred to around Christmas due to the pandemic.
Back to his parent club for the 2020-21 season, Odegaard is expected to feature heavily in Zidane’s plans for the upcoming campaign. A return to Sociedad for the opening La Liga match, however, seems unlikely since the 21-year-old missed training and Madrid’s pre-season friendly due to a knee problem.
Isco and Marco Asensio are also unlikely to feature for Real Madrid.
David Silva back in training after COVID scare
There’s a big piece of good news from the Sociedad camp. Former Manchester City star David Silva, who was signed in this summer window to replace the outgoing Odegaard, is back to training after recovering from a COVID-19.
Silva missed Sociedad’s campaign opener – a 1-1 draw with Valladolid last Sunday.
Apart from the Real Sociedad vs Real Madrid tie, there are six other matches, in for matchweek 2 including Celta Vigo vs Valencia, which kick starts on Saturday. Here’s the full list.
