Mike Norman clocks legal 9.86s for 100m in Texas

American 400m ace joins Wayde van Niekerk as only man to go under 10s for 100m, 20s for 200m and 44s for 400m.

Mike Norman has run the fastest 100m of 2020 so far in Fort Worth, Texas on Monday (20th July).

Not bad considering his best distance is the 400m.

Making his first appearance of the year, Norman clocked a seriously quick 9.86s with a legal following wind of 1.6m/s to beat his training partner, world 400m hurdles silver medallist Rai Benjamin.

That saw him join Wayde van Niekerk in an elite club as he has now gone under 10 seconds for 100m, 20 seconds for 200m and 44 seconds for 400m.

Posting the video on his Twitter account, Norman claimed it was his first attempt at the 100m in four years.

Surely it won't be the last.

The talented Mr Norman

Norman made people sit up and take notice at the start of 2018 when he broke the world indoor 400m record while at college.

In June that year, he won the Paris Diamond League 200m with a new personal best of 19.84s.

He turned professional at the start of 2019 and continued turning in stunning performances, running 43.45s on his pro debut at the Mt SAC Relays in California to go fourth on the all-time list behind van Niekerk, Michael Johnson and Butch Reynolds.

Then he beat Noah Lyles over 200m in the Rome Diamond League in a blistering 19.70s.

He decided to focus on the 400m at the 2019 World Championships and was a strong favourite for the event in Doha.

But after cruising through his heat, he felt the effects of a lingering injury and trailed in last in his semi-final, telling Reuters, "My body gave me warning signs today and I listened to them."

This 100m victory in Fort Worth was his first competitive run since that Doha disappointment.

He is just the second man to break 10 seconds this season with South Africa's Akani Simbine clocking 9.91s in Pretoria back in March.

Lyles ran 9.93s on his seasonal debut in Florida, but the wind of +4.0m/s ruled it ineligible for record purposes.
