The New Delhi National Marathon 2021 will be held on March 7, the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) said on Tuesday.
The announcement was made on the same day that the new date for the Mumbai Marathon was revealed. The New Delhi event will feature four races - the full marathon, the half marathon, as well as 10km and 5km runs.
The full marathon will be counted towards qualification for the upcoming Tokyo Olympics in July-August. The marathon qualifying timings for men and women are 2:11:30 seconds and 2:29:30 seconds respectively.
In the 2020 edition, Rashpal Singh and Jyoti Gawte won the men's and women's full marathon titles with timing of 2:23:29 seconds and 2:50:37 seconds, respectively.
Indian marathon runner and Rio 2016 Olympian Nitendra Singh Rawat intends to start his season with the New Delhi National Marathon before heading to the Mumbai Marathon. He hopes to make the Olympic cut at one of the two full marathons.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic safety protocols, the sixth edition of the event will have virtual participation as well.
While a select group will be running the live event in Delhi, other amateur runners will be able to participate via an online app. Registration for the event is already underway and will go on till March 6.
The event adds to a busy schedule for Indian athletics in the upcoming few months.
The National Race Walking Championships start on February 13, followed by the first two Indian Grand Prix events - the first on February 18 and the second on February 25.
The third Indian Grand Prix is scheduled for March 5 and the Federation Cup from March 15 to 19.
