NorthEast United FC's (NEUFC) Indian Super League (ISL) 2020-21 campaign starts with a match against Mumbai City FC at the Tilak Maidan Stadium on November 21.
Despite a strong start last campaign under Croatian Robert Jarni, the Highlanders fell off the track to finish just over bottom-placed Hyderabad.
NorthEast will be out looking for a fresh start this season under the stewardship of British head coach Gerard Nus. At just 35, Nus is the youngest coach in the history of ISL but comes with considerable pedigree, having coached the Liverpool academy in the past. He has also been a first-team staff at Anfield.
NorthEast United's talisman Federico Gallego is still with the team and fans will hope the classy midfielder can put his injury woes from last season behind him and reclaim the form from 2018-19 which made him one of the best players in ISL.
Unfortunately, NorthEast United FC fans never got the opportunity to see Gallego combine with Asamoah Gyan last season. The Ghanaian legend, who joined as the team's marquee player for ISL season 6, impressed in the first few matches before being forced out with an injury.
Gallego, meanwhile, only returned in the final stage of the league phase after recovering from a horrific broken leg he suffered during the 2018-19 semi-finals against Bengaluru FC.
Though there'll be no Gyan this season, Gallego will be joined by another Ghanaian Kwesi Appiah. Though not quite a big name like Gyan, the 30-year-old is a full-fledged Ghana international and has spent a large part of his career playing in England for teams like Crystal Palace, Reading and others.
Nus will also have Guinea international Idrissa Sylla and Mauritanian international Khassa Camara to call upon.
Belgian defender Benjamin Lambot, Australian centre back Dylan Fox and Portuguese winger Luis Machado are the other new foreign recruits for the season for NorthEast United FC.
The ever-reliable Subhasish Roy Choudhury is expected to start in goal, but the focus will be on a host of young Indian players for the northeastern states like Lalengmawia, Ninthoi Meetei and Alfred Lalroutsang.
