The Olympic Channel has won a Shorty Award for Best in Publishing for the social media campaign behind its original series, Take the Podium.
The Publishing category recognises the most effective and creative use of social media by publishers to enhance and/or revolutionise their customer experience. In addition, Take the Podium was also recognised as an Audience Honouree in the Publishing category, a Finalist in the Best in Sports category and received a Gold Distinction in the Storytelling category.
The Olympic Medal Reallocation impact
Told through the perspective of the athletes and teams, Take the Podium details the impact of the Olympic Medal Reallocation process through the inspirational journeys of clean athletes who were awarded their rightful Olympic medal following the disqualification of doped athletes.
Profiles in the six-episode original series include those of Canadian weightlifter Christine Girard, Lithuanian heptathlete Austra Skujyte, the 2008 Japanese 4x100m men’s relay team, German hammer thrower Betty Heidler, British javelin thrower Goldie Sayers and the 2014 Team USA two-man and four-man bobsleigh teams piloted by the late Steven Holcomb.
The goal of award-winning social media campaign was to create awareness of the Take the Podium series by honouring the athletes’ redemption stories, informing viewers of the historic Olympic Medal Reallocation process and engaging viewers with the emotional moments behind the athletes’ journeys. The initial phase of the campaign comprised of 24 total posts received a positive response from viewers resulting in more than 17.4M impressions, 569K engagements and 4.6M video views on Olympic Channel social media handles across Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube.
The Shorty Awards, now in its 12th year, were the first awards show to honour social media. By constantly evolving along with the changing landscape of social media, The Shorty’s remains the most prominent award show of its kind. The Shorty Awards continue to recognise the most influential, popular, and culturally relevant brands, organisations, agencies, campaigns and influencers across social media.
12th Annual Shorty Awards Brand and Organization winners will be celebrated at the star-studded awards ceremony on 3 May 2020. This year’s show will be a digital-only event in light of public health concerns surrounding COVID-19.
