Sometimes in life, there are little surreal moments.

For Cailtin Rooskrantz, the South African gymnast making history in her country, that came on Sunday when another history maker, four-time Olympic champion Simone Biles, liked a tweet featuring our story on the 18-year-old.

“Big Fan Girl moment 🤪 but this definitely made my night,” tweeted Rooskrantz.

Dominic Thiem back from the brink to take the U.S. Open trophy

Down two sets to none, things looked bleak for Austrian tennis player Dominic Thiem. Until they didn’t.

The No. 2 seed battled back against Germany’s Alexander Zverev, taking three straight sets and eventually the title. The final score was 2-6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6. With Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal skipping the U.S. Open and Novak Djokovic’s default earlier in the tournament, Thiem’s win is the first new Grand Slam champion in six years.

“I achieved a life goal and a dream I had for many many years,” Thiem said, according to the New York Times.

Elsewhere in New York, U.S. Open women’s champion, Naomi Osaka, took to social media, showing off the spoils of her incredible two-week run.

“You already know I had to bring out the headwrap for this one 😉,” Osaka tweeted.

Tour de France hits final stretch

The 2020 Tour de France begins its final six days on Tuesday with the 16th stage from La Tour-du-Pin to Villard-de-Lans. Monday is a rest day for the event.

Tadej Pogačar won Sunday’s stage (Lyon to Grand Colombier). The win was his second victory of the Tour so far and came by holding off yellow jersey Primož Roglič (Jumbo-Visma).

“Jumbo just set the pace really high all day and made it a really difficult stage. In the end, I was waiting for a sprint. I’m so happy to win again,” Pogačar said.

Going into Tuesday’s final stretch, Roglič leads Pogačar by 40 seconds. Colombia’s Rigoberto Uran sits in third.

This and that

In the NBA bubble Sunday, the Denver Nuggets held off the Los Angeles Clippers 111-98, tying the series at three a piece and forcing a deciding game seven Tuesday.

With football action kicking up across Europe, Sunday’s action between Paris St Germain and Marseille saw five players receiving red cares, including 2016 Olympic gold medallist Neymar. The Brazilian star told an official he heard a racist slur, something he repeated later on social media. Marseille won the match 1-0.

And, finally, in case you missed it, some Japanese skaters were back in action for 'Dreams on Ice', including Youth Olympics gold medallist Kagiyama Yuma.
