“Nothing can prepare you for that kind of pressure – or responsibility,” said Freeman, according to an Australian Broadcasting Corporation press release. “I am 47 years old and I have to take that responsibility seriously. By that, I mean give myself permission to share the story in its entirety.”
The final torch bearer of those Games, Freeman’s 49.11 in the women’s 400m was part of a pivotal moment in relations between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.
“Cathy Freeman remains one of Australia’s most popular sporting figures, held in tremendous affection by the public for the role she played in shaping our national identity,” the release says.
12 years ago today, Matthias Steiner claimed an emotional gold medal in +105 kg weightlifting. Steiner entered the final round in third position, needing to make a massive 10kg difference to claim gold.
That’s exactly what he did, erupting in tears of joy and dedicating his win to his wife who had died 13 months earlier in a car accident. Steiner kissed a picture of his late wife during the victory ceremony.
“The most important thing is I have to accept what I cannot change,” Steiner told Olympic Channel earlier this year. “Accept it, and once I have accepted it, then I have already won 50% of the battle because I have let go of everything and I am able to focus on things than I can do and not on things that I cannot do.”
Steiner’s win was also recently featured in Olympic Channel’s Great Olympic Moments.
Froome will serve as team leader for Vuelta a España.
“Chris is a legend of our sport, a true champion who has demonstrated incredible grit and determination to come back from his crash last year. We want to support him to compete for another Grand Tour title and the Vuelta gives him that little bit more time to continue his progress to the top level,” Dave Brailsford, Team Ineos general manager said in a press release.
Meanwhile Thomas, the 2018 Tour de France champ, takes on the team leader role for Giro d’Italia.
“Geraint will target the Giro and take on the opportunity to double up his Tour de France win with another Grand Tour title, with the aim of being the first Welshman to win it,” said Brailsford.
Yesterday, we asked how old Oscar Swahn was when he set the record as the oldest Olympic champion in 1912. Here’s the answer: Swahn was 64 years and 258 days old when he took gold in Stockholm.
Now for today’s question.
Wrestling has featured at all but one Olympic Games. At which Games was the sport not part of the official programme?
