Olympic Daily News: 28 May 2020! Russian gymnasts targeting possible end of year competitions

Get your daily update of Olympic news: Trivia, trends and talking points

86 years ago today, the first recorded quintuplets to survive were born to Olivia and Elzire Donne in Ontario, Canada. Two of the five identical sisters, Annette and Cecile, are still alive today – and we are wishing them a very happy birthday.

It’s almost equally as rare – but twins have featured in the Olympics, from New Zealand’s Georgina and Caroline Evers-Swindell to Team USA’s Paul and Morgan Hamm.

Angelina Melnikova, Russian gymnasts return to training

After two months away, Russian artistic gymnasts are back at their training base at Round Lake outside Moscow. All of the athletes were tested for the coronavirus before being allowed to resume workouts.

“The Russian Cup is supposed to take place in November. It is possible that the European Championships will also happen,” Valentina Rodionenko said of a possible 2020 return to competition, according to Gymnovosti. “It’s dangerous to guess but we’re not losing hope. We really need competitions, preferably international ones.”

With Round Lake reopening, All Around star Angelina Melnikova resumes her work toward Tokyo 2020. Co-star Chen Yile continues to train in Ghangzhou, while Morgan Hurds Delaware gym is set to open Monday.

Philippine athletes finding a new way to work

The Philippine Olympic Committee has made 100 bicycles available to its athletes who may be struggling to travel to and from their training venues.

Though POC president Abraham Tolentino admits they will not have enough bikes to serve all of the country’s Olympic athletes, he says it’s still a step in the right direction.

"With the new normal which mandates that we find new ways to go about our daily business, national athletes who do not have a personal mode of transportation will surely benefit from this," Tolentino said.

Lindsey Vonn on Tokyo 2020, home workouts and more…

Olympic champion skier Lindsey Vonn gave a wide-ranging interview with Bleacher Report, covering topics from how she’s staying in shape at home to the delayed Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

The American said that while the postponement was devastating, it offered a chance to reset.

"If it was me I would try to optimise the situation as much as possible. You'd have to restructure your plan for the entire year."

Needing breakfast inspiration?

We’ve all probably been cooking a little more than normal so let Russian rhythmic gymnast Anastasia Maksimova teach you how to make pancakes – with a gymnastics inspired twist (or should we say flip?)

Trivia time!
