Get your daily update of Olympic news: Trivia, trends, and talking points on World Taekwondo Day as gymnasts ready for return to World Cup competition
Today is World Taekwondo Day. The annual celebration marks the anniversary of the 4 September 1994 decision by the International Olympic Committee to include the sport at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney.
"Taekwondo Day is a day to remember the qualities that make taekwondo a truly global martial art and sport, qualities like perseverance, respect, self-control and integrity are what we need right now in these challenging circumstances,” said World Taekwondo president Chungwon Choue in a message on the organisation’s YouTube.
"I therefore call on the global taekwondo family to show our indomitable spirit and ride out the storm. We will emerge stronger together from the pandemic."
If you’ve ever wanted to eavesdrop on a conversation between Olympic figure skating team bronze medallists Ashley Wagner and Adam Rippon, you’re in luck. The two friends took to Instagram live on Thursday night as part of Wagner’s series “Confidence Call.”
The chat with Rippon featured serious topics and as well as Rippon’s trademark lighter side.
“I don’t want to say that I really got you on the ring light train, but all aboard,” joked Rippon as Wagner responded: “Choo, choo!”
Wagner says she started the series to share the kinds of conversations she’s having with people as she begins her new post-skating life, and the duo begins their chat talking about how Rippon reset from a broken ankle a year out from the 2018 Olympics.
“I’m like, ‘Are you OK?’ You go, ‘No. Am I going to be OK? I’m going to the Olympics,’” Wagner recalled.
A day after the Brazilian Football Confederation said they had been paying its men’s and women’s football teams equally since March, England’s Football Association said they’ve been paying their teams equally since January 2020.
“The FA pays its women's players exactly the same as their male counterparts for representing England, both in terms of match fees and match bonuses,” read a statement to Sky Sports News. "This parity has been in place since January 2020."
England's success at the FIFA Women's World Cup in 2019 guaranteed a spot for Great Britain's women to compete at the Olympics in Tokyo.
The announcements come as the reigning women’s World Cup champions from the United States fight for equal pay from US Soccer. Australia, Norway, and New Zealand also pay their male and female squads equally.
After a nearly six month interruption due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the International Gymnastics Federation have announced that their World Cup series is to resume 2-4 October in Szombathely, Hungary.
More than 80 athletes from 18 European nations have registered for the event, including 2008 Olympic silver medallist Filip Ude, 2012 Olympic bronze medallist Igor Radivilov and eight-time World champion and three-time Olympic medallist Marian Dragulescu.
The event will be just the fourth gymnastics World Cup event of the year. The Baku World Cup was cancelled before the finals, making the American Cup on 7 March in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the last complete event of the season. Morgan Hurd, who stars in the Olympic Channel original series 'All Around,' was the women's champion in Milwaukee.
“This is the moment we have all been waiting for, and we are so pleased that the FIG World Challenge Cup Series is able to take place in Szombathely, Hungary,” FIG President and IOC member Morinari Watanabe said. “Gymnasts have been eagerly anticipating returning to competition, and the local organising committee in Szombathely has diligently worked to make sure all athletes will be able to compete in safe and healthy circumstances.”
