American teammate Maddie Mastro pulls record trick to inflict Kim's first defeat for over a year
Olympic snowboard champion Chloe Kim revealed that she had broken her ankle while competing at the U.S. Open in Vail, Colorado.
The newly minted world champion posted about her injury on social media, shortly after finishing second in the halfpipe competition (Saturday 2nd March 2019).
American star Kim added that she will need "surgery to get it fixed".
The injury is a double blow for the 18-year-old, who was beaten in the women's halfpipe finals by teammate Maddie Mastro.
It beings an end to Kim's run of eight consecutive victories which includes the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang.
Kim scored 84.62 points in Colorado but fell just 0.12 points shy of defending her U.S.Open title.
Mastro claimed victory with a trick never before seen in a women's competition, a double Crippler Indy.
The 19-year-old told Team USA she was "overwhelmed" after making history in claiming the biggest win of her career.
The American has been on the rise since her Olympic debut in PyeongChang, where she finished 12th.
Last month she claimed halfpipe bronze at the world championships in Utah and now has secured her first win since January 2015.
