The all-Indian pairing are the top seeds in doubles at the Ferrero Challenger tennis tournament in Spain.
The Indian tennis duo of Purav Raja and Ramkumar Ramanathan progressed to the quarter-finals of the Ferrero Challenger doubles event at Alicante, Spain, after a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Spain’s David Marrero and Serbia’s Nenad Zimonjic.
Raja-Ramanathan are the doubles top seeds in the tournament and will face the all-Spanish team of Gerard Granollers and Pedro Martinez next.
The Indian duo began well, breaking their opponents in the opening game of the first set.
The Spanish-Serbian duo drew level at 2-2 after breaking the Indians in the fourth game, but the top seeds regained their advantage immediately and broke Zimonjic’s serve in game five.
The eighth game turned out to be a crucial juncture in the set as Marrero-Zimonjic threatened to break Raja’s serve, but the Indian duo recovered well to save three break points and held onto their lead.
Ramanathan, who bowed out of the singles event at Alicante after a hard-fought loss against Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz Garfia, closed out the set 6-4 with some big serves in the tenth game.
In the second set, Raja and Ramanathan again got their noses in front early with a little help from an ill-timed double fault by their opponents in the first game.
From there on out, there was no looking back for the Indians as Raja and Ramanathan cruised through 6-0 in the second set.
Meanwhile, in Cologne, Germany, Divij Sharan and his American partner Jackson Withrow exited the bett1HULKS Indoors ATP 250 tournament after a 6-3, 6-3 loss to French duo Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut.
