PV Sindhu reveals how she's staying positive during lockdown

India’s badminton superstar joined the Olympic Day workout and spoke about the importance of meditation, learning new things, and returning to action ahead of Tokyo 2020.

PV Sindhu says cooking and meditation have helped keep her mind active during COVID-19 lockdown restrictions.

The reigning world badminton champion is currently at home with her family in Hyderabad, and on Wednesday (23 June) joined the official Olympic Day Workout.

Speaking to Olympic Channel after completing the 25-minute session, she said, "I've been learning a lot of new things. Yes, I do miss badminton but apart from badminton there's something new and that keeps your mind busy. That's how you can keep going rather than just thinking what's going to happen."

With the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games postponed due to COVID-19, the Rio 2016 silver medallist says she's been learning how to cook Indian foods and bake cakes as well as meditating daily saying it "keeps you calm and makes you think".

And she told viewers live on the @Olympics Instagram, "Just stay positive, stay home and everything will be fine. I'm sure that we're all going to get on court, get ready and prepared for the Olympics.

Sindhu to "pick and choose" tournaments when competition resumes

During lockdown, Sindhu has been concentrating on cardio and weight training while she is unable to practise on court.

The 24-year-old shuttler says she is keen to add to her trophy collection when the BWF World Tour restarts, but knows she will have to manage her schedule carefully with events set to be held in quick succession to make up for lost time.

Sindhu said, "Our next tournament is the Chinese Taipei (Open), so hopefully we will be doing that in September. I don’t know how the situation’s going to be – but let’s hope everything will be fine.

"I think there will be a lot of tournaments in the next four months, whenever we get back to our tournaments and matches. It's very important to pick and choose smartly which tournaments to play.

"As a player, every individual has a different mindset. Injuries are part of life, injuries keep coming so you have to be physically and mentally fit, to be positive. I think that's very important right now."

As for her bid for gold at Tokyo 2020, Sindhu said, "We all wanted to play the Olympics. But I think life comes first and we have to get used to it. There's only one year to go and I hope everything goes fine.

“I have five medals at the World Championships - two bronze, two silver and a gold - so I’m expecting a lot more medals."

Sindhu was one of a number of Indian Olympians, including fellow badminton medallist Saina Nehwal and wrestling stars Sushil Kumar and Vinesh Phogat, celebrating Olympic Day.
