With the Indian Super League (ISL) heading into the penultimate round of the league phase, each match will hold big significance in the top four race.

ATK Mohun Bagan and Mumbai City FC have already qualified for the ISL playoffs and are already guaranteed to share the top two spots. The remaining two slots in the top four, however, are wide open with five teams still in contention.

Among them are Bengaluru FC, who need a win to stay alive in the top four race. The Blues play FC Goa on Sunday.

How can Bengaluru FC qualify for the ISL playoffs?

Currently five points off fourth-placed FC Goa in the ISL points table, Bengaluru FC need to win both their remaining matches – against FC Goa and Jamshedpur FC – to have any chance of making it to the top four.

On 22 points from 18 matches, two wins will leave Sunil Chhetri’s Bengaluru FC side on 28 points at the end of the league phase.

Three teams – FC Goa, Hyderabad FC and NorthEast United FC – are already on 27 points from 18 matches.

So, even if the Blues win both their remaining fixtures, they will need to hope that only one of the above three finish above them on the points table.

How can FC Goa qualify for the playoffs?

Currently sitting in fourth position, FC Goa have a better chance of making it to the top four than Bengaluru FC but need to be on their toes to avoid any slip-ups.

Wins in their remaining two matches guarantee the Gaurs a playoff spot. But even if they lose or draw against Bengaluru FC, a win against Hyderabad FC in the final round will still be enough to see them through without any dependency on other results.

In other key fixtures of round 21, Hyderabad FC face ATK Mohun Bagan and NorthEast United FC square off against East Bengal.
