Sun overhauls deficit from qualifications to win title after Xiao struggles on horizontal bar
Sun Wei has been crowned China's men's all-around national champion after successfully overhauling Xiao Ruoteng's lead from the qualification round.
Sun, representing Jiangsu province, topped the scores on the pommel horse (14.900) and parallel bars (14.800), and also had the best combined score in the final (85.400).
China's national artistic gymnastics championships uses an aggregate total from the final and qualification rounds to determine its overall champion, and Sun had trailed 2017 all-around world champion Xiao by 0.7 points heading into Friday's final.
However, Xiao struggled on the high bar (12.850) and could only manage a total of 83.950 points - just the fourth-best score on the day - allowing Sun to overtake him.
Sun's overall score of 172.300 was enough to beat Xiao (171.600), with Deng Shudi third (170.650). Lin Chaopan, who won worlds silver behind Xiao in 2017, finished fourth overall.
Going into the final rotation, with both Sun and Xiao in the same group on the high bar, Xiao was still just ahead of Sun in the overall score - 158.750 to 158.200.
Xiao's scores on each of the other five apparatus were all in the high 13s to low 14s, and good enough for fourth or better on all of them.
However, Sun laid down a marker with his routine, with a difficulty score of 6.1 and a execution score of 8.000.
That left Xiao needing a score of at least 13.550 points, while doing a routine with a lower difficulty value (5.7).
However, he only managed an execution score of 7.150 - the lowest among the top 10 on the apparatus.
