Jordan BURROUGHS जीवनी

Jordan Burroughs is a USA icon: one of a handful of freestyle wrestlers to have transcended the sport and taken a spot in the national psyche.

Boasting an enviable record in college wrestling, Burroughs burst on to the international scene by winning his first world title in his year as a senior. Less than 12 months later, he was standing atop an Olympic podium, having powered through the competition to seize the 74kg gold medal at the London 2012 Games. He was aged just 24.

By the time he reached Rio 2016 Burroughs carried a remarkable 130-2 win-loss record on the international circuit. He was a three-time world champion, having also triumphed in 2013 and 2015, and he was so focused on defending his title that both his Instagram and Twitter handles read @AllISeeisGold.

But it was not to be for the USA star. Burroughs lost in the quarter-finals to the man ranked just behind him, Aniuar Geduev of Russia, before crashing out in the first round of the repechage second-chance competition to finish ninth overall.

“This was the most devastating loss that I had ever taken in my career,” Burroughs told the Olympic Channel, before revealing his road to recovery had included a commitment to mindfulness. “And so I was like, if I'm going to come back, I'm going to refine myself both physically but also psychologically and spiritually."

Wife the support of his wife and his young children, the 1.73m-tall wrestler grappled his way back to the top. In late 2017 he secured redemption, defeating Uzbekistan’s Bekzod Abdurakhmonov, the man who beat him in the repechage in Rio, on his way to a fourth world title.

Bronze medals followed in both the 2018 and 2019 World Championships, with Burroughs firmly focused once again on winning a second Olympic gold medal.

After Tokyo 2020, the man who has released multiple wrestling shoe ranges like he might head to the world of mixed martial arts. Burroughs beat the then-undefeated UFC fighter Ben Askren in a charity MMA bout in May 2019 and later confirmed he will consider a switch after competing in his third Olympic Games.
